MSc/PhD Assistantship in Sea Level Surge Modelling at IOES, University of Malaya

We are looking for a motivated candidate for a MSc/PhD position in sea level surge modelling. The research project will use numerical modelling method to study the impacts of northeast monsoon and sea level rise on sea level surge along the northeast coast of Peninsular Malaysia.


Requirements:

• Bachelor or Master’s degree in Civil, Coastal or Ocean Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or a closely related discipline.
• Knowledge and experience in hydrodynamic, wave and tide modelling would be an advantage.
• Solid programming skills in Fortran and MATLAB.
• Able to write and converse well in English.
• Capacity to think and work independently and in a diverse group of scientists and engineers.


The successful candidate will be based at IOES (http://www.ioes.um.edu.my) which is one of the 14 Higher Institution Centres of Excellence (HICoE) in Malaysia. The responsibilities of a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) include writing and publishing scientific results which will lead ultimately to a dissertation.

MSc research assistantship in flood inundation modelling at IOES, University of Malaya

Applications are invited for a MSc research assistantship in flood inundation modelling at Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences (IOES), University of Malaya (UM), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The research project will use theoretical and numerical methods to study the impacts of climate change and extreme events on flood risks. A case study of a river (e.g. Kelantan River) at the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia will be conducted.


Requirements:

• The student should possess a strong background in fluid mechanics, hydrology, river hydraulics and hydrodynamics, flood risk or closely related fields.
• The candidate should preferably be familiar with hydrological and hydrodynamic model (e.g. Flood Modeller), have knowledge of numerical modelling, quantitative data assessment, statistical methods and GIS.
• The student should have a first-class or good second-upper-class honours degree in civil/environmental engineering, physics, mathematics or closely related disciplines.
• Able to write research papers in English.
• Capacity to think and work independently and in a diverse group of scientists and engineers.

Post-Doctoral Fellow in Coastal and Ocean Science at IOES, University of Malaya, Malaysia
Research Fellow in Coastal and Ocean Science at the University of Malaya

The Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences (IOES) at the University of Malaya (UM), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellow position in coastal and ocean science.


Research areas:


• wave and hydrodynamic modelling
• storm or monsoon sea level surge
• Antarctic hydrodynamics and its interactions with the marine environments
• transport of marine debris or plastics in marine and coastal areas

Requirements:

• Applicants should have a PhD in Coastal or Ocean Science or Engineering, Physical Oceanography or a closely related field. Applicants who are currently about to complete their PhDs may also apply.
• Applicants are required to have experience in numerical modelling using FVCOM, TELEMAC, SCHISM, SWAN or other similar hydrodynamic or wave models
• Applicants are required to have solid programming skills in Fortran and MATLAB and be comfortable working in a parallel computing environment
• Able to write research papers in English
• Able to converse well in English
• Capacity to think and work independently and in a diverse group of scientists


The successful candidate will be based at IOES (http://www.ioes.um.edu.my) which is one of the 14 Higher Institution Centres of Excellence (HICoE) in Malaysia. The initial term of appointment will be for 12 months, with possibility of extension subject to satisfactory performance.
